Autumn 2009 Newsletter
Greetings from Orleans Habitat for Humanity!
As I write this, the big news in Buffalo is the thousands of volunteers
who have descended on a west side neighborhood to participate in
building a new home and fixing up the neighborhood for the Extreme
Makeover TV show. However, as with most of "reality" TV this doesn't
look much like reality as we see it from our vantage point here
in Orleans County. Volunteers to help with all aspects of our work
(including construction and other committee activities) continue
to be a rare and valued asset and more are always needed as we move
forward.
We're in the final stages of work on house #12 on East State Street
in Albion and we hope to be finished by year's end. As we finish
this home, we're already looking forward to our next home which
should get underway early in 2010.
Next year holds a number of challenges for Orleans Habitat for
Humanity.
The first is our goal to tackle our first home rehab. All our homes
so far have been new construction; but we have received a generous
offer from a local businessman to help fund the purchase and renovation
of an existing home. Renovating a substandard house benefits the
community as well as providing a home for another family - so in
many ways a rehab multiplies the impact of our work.
Second, we must become more connected to the construction community
in Orleans County. We need experienced construction people to help
provide leadership in the overall home building process. This includes
construction managers who can guide our overall effort and crew
leaders who can provide leadership in specific areas like framing,
plumbing, HVAC, electric and others. This construction experience
will be even more critical to us in a rehab since the issues faced
are likely to be less predictable than in new construction.
If you'd like to learn more about how you might contribute to OHFH's
efforts, please call me or any of the other board members listed
further on in this newsletter. As a 100% volunteer organization,
we depend greatly on our entire community of active supporters for
our future success.
We really appreciate your continuing support of Orleans Habitat
for Humanity. Thank you!!
